                     INTRODUCTION     


     Eli Jankowsky was born in the early part of winter in the year of 1608 and ended up growing up with poor gypsy parents raising her who were very loving and caring.The family had never owned land and either traveled around or stayed in whatever housing was provided by their employers while working as labor on a farm.This made life very hard and left her wanting to find a way to make things better so they could have that chance to work their way out of poverty.She also had a best friend who was a boy named Ami Bronski who was slightly younger than she was.

   They were both very close friends as they grew up from small children into older kids who were legally considered adults on the ninth birthdays even if they weren't really mature enough to be able to have babies yet.They had expected to be married with parents watching and with family to celebrate the occasion with them.That would sadly not be the case because of witch hunters.There had been stories of witch hunters causing families to be broken up or even wiped out entirely in some cases.There were other stories of kids being driven off from their families and finding out the rest of their family was wiped out and they were the only ones left.

    It was what ended up happening to Eli Jankowsky and Ami Bronski just after Eli's ninth birthday and they were lucky to have escaped together.It was great that they'd been able to stay together and get married after Ami turned nine himself.It would be hard work and hard going until they managed to be able to find pasage to a new colony.They'd be going to start over as colonial settlers because they didn't want to end up like their parents and they would have a chance at a better future for themselves and the kids they had and raised.The hopes they'd have with being colonial settlers came with hard work and also good luck.

    They had tried so hard to make a go of it in London though things didn't exactly work out for them there.They ended up finding they'd have to move on and start over in a new colonial settlement.They ended up seeing a chance to get cheap or free passage to a harbor in an area know as Deery Meadows in the area to beome know as Maine.They would be starting with a large and empty lot where they'd have to work to be able to get a simple house built to provide basic shelter for the first winter and upgrade it in the spring of the next year.They managed to get onto a colony ship heading to North America.

    Their crossing had been very long and dangerous as was often the case when those old wooden sailing ships tried to sail accross the Atlantic Ocean in the 17th century.They ended up sailing though the remains of a hurricane on their way over and it had made the journey very rough for the passengers on the ship.There had been so many cases where these ships got lost at sea or attacked by pirates who plundered the ships.There had been other cases where diseases stuck down occupants of some of these ships and killed everybody on board.Some settlers even died on the journey even if the ship made it.

    The Jankowskys were lucky to have made their journey safely though it had been very rough and was hard on them passing through the storms along the way.They'd arrived so late in the evening on the last day of spring in 1620 that they ended up staying over at the town hall for that first night.They planned on cheking their own land out the next day after summer started.
